This week’s “Embracing Faith” article will focus on Embracing Faith through Reflection.

Embracing Faith Through Community

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you...” -Isaiah 41:10

Faith is something that has been tested frequently throughout the pandemic.

Whether it was a diagnosis of COVID-19 or dealing with economic issues, one’s faith and relationship with God were often questioned over the past 18 months.

In the most recent episode of the Hearts Afire Podcast, Sr. Bridget Mary Troy, OP, a Sister of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, reflected on her battle with COVID-19, along with the importance of faith during sickness.

For Sr. Bridget, December 16, 2020, was a date that she would never forget, as it began her battle with the deadly virus.

Sr. Bridget shared that she experienced “a flash of lightning through my head. I could hardly walk.”

After receiving her diagnosis, Sr. Bridget would miss Christmas and New Years due to being quarantined. During that time, she specifically credited Sisters Mary Flood and Noreen Walsh for helping her get through the worst aspects of the virus, most notably fatigue, which was “very bad. I didn’t think I would be able to drive again.”

Along with the medical expertise of Sisters Mary and Noreen, Sr. Bridget credited faith for guiding her through her battle with the virus and leading her to recovery.

“We know our faith so well,” explained Sr. Bridget. “God is very close to me. He carried me through the whole thing, even though I wasn’t aware; he was there the whole time.”

She added, “God carries us through everything. My faith kept me strong in itself. I didn’t even have to call upon my faith. The faith was there in me and kept me strong.

After further reflection, Sr. Bridget shared advice for anyone battling the disease, along with any other sickness.

“Never lose faith in God because we know that he will answer our prayers.”
