MARY DIAMANT
MARCH 12, 1926 – APRIL 30, 2019
ASSOCIATE COMMITMENT: November 8, 1986
Mary was born in the Bronx where her family worshiped at St. Frances de Chantel Church until a move to Bergen County. Following her marriage to Jack, they moved to Downsville, NY, and eventually back to Rockland County to West Haverstraw. There she volunteered at the Holy Eucharist Chapel at Letchworth Village in Haverstraw, assisting residents with Communion and special events.
Before her marriage, Mary volunteered at the New York Foundling Hospital and progressed to taking children from St. Dominic’s Home for special occasions. With her move back to Rockland County it was an opportunity to reconnect with the Blauvelt Dominican Sisters. With her daughters grown it was time to return to work. Mary met Sr. Kathleen Sullivan and was hired as her secretary at Dominican College in 1969, eventually becoming her Administrative Assistant as Sr. Kathleen became President of the College, until Mary’s retirement in 2009, completing 40 years of service to Dominican College. Over the years she was active with the sisters at the convent and became an Associate with the second group who were received in 1986. With so many years of connection to the Blauvelt Congregation the official connection as an associate was a natural progression.
In 2015 Mary moved with her daughter to Morehead, Kentucky where she spent her final days.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary and Susan, a brother, Harry, and two granddaughters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Edna.
At Mary’s request a memorial mass will be celebrated at the Motherhouse Chapel on July 20, 2019.
