SISTER ANNE THOMAS MCMAHON,formerly Elizabeth McMahon, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 78 years, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in St. Martin de Porres Infirmary. Sr. Anne Thomas was 97 years of age.
Sr. Anne Thomas was born to Thomas McMahon and Hannah McKeown on October 24, 1916 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on August 15, 1936 from St. Luke's Parish, Bronx, New York. Sr. Anne received the Dominican habit on July 3, 1937, professed first vows on July 5, 1938, and final vows on July 5, 1941.
Sister held the B.A. in English from Manhattan College and the M.A. in Theology from Providence College, Providence, Rhode Island .
Sr. Anne Thomas' many years of active ministry were devoted to education as a teacher and administrator.
Her ministries included: St. Dominic's School, Blauvelt, NY, 1938-1941; St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, Bronx, 1941-1949; St. Benedict's School, Bronx, 1949-1956; St. Anselm's School, Bronx, 1956-1960; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Goshen, NY, 1960-1967; Fr. Lopez High School, Daytona Beach, Florida, 1967-1968; St. Peter's School, Liberty, NY, teacher/principal, 1968-1970 ; St. Catharine's School, Blauvelt, NY and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, NY Coordinating Principal, 1970-1971, and Dominican College, Blauvelt, NY, Faculty, 1971-1976. Sister ministered in St. Dominic's Home as Supervisor of Household, 1976-1979, She served the Congregation as Director of the Diet Kitchen, 1979-1986; Community Historian, 1986-1993; Volunteer Services, 1993-1994, and prayer minister 1994-2004. Due to failing health, Sister retired to the St. Martin de Porres Infirmary where she remained until the time of her death.
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Anne Thomas is survived by her, sisters-in-law Nelida (Nellie) and Jeanne; nephews Terrence and James; and friend Maureen Young. Among her Sisters in Community, is her dear friend, Sister Katherine Downing. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Voet and brothers Joseph, James and Thomas McMahon.
