SISTER KATHLEEN TUCKER, O.P., formerly Rita Tucker, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 75 years died on September 12, 2019 in St. Martin De Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt. Sister was 93 years of age.
Sr. Kathleen was born to William and Jane Farley Tucker in the Bronx, N.Y. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on January 21, 1945 from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in the Bronx. She received the Dominican Habit on August 26, 1945, professed her first vows on August 27, 1946, and final vows on August 27, 1949. Sister received a BS in Education from Catholic Teachers College, Providence, Rhode Island, and a MA in English from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. She also held an LPN from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y.
Sister’s many years in ministry include teaching at St. Dominic’s School, Blauvelt, NY (1947-1948, 1955-1959); St. Raymond’s School, Providence, Rhode Island (1948-1955); Our Lady of the Assumption, Bronx, NY (1959-1966). She served as Principal/Teacher at St. Peter’s School, Liberty, NY (1966-1968); St. Dominic’s Convent, Formation Director, Blauvelt, NY (1968-1971); Principal/Religious Education Coordinator, Our Savior School, Bronx, NY (1971-1974) and Religious Education Coordinator, Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Bronx, NY (1974-1976). After studying at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Yonkers, she returned to the Motherhouse in Blauvelt to minister as an LPN in the Sisters Infirmary (1977-1979); as Infirmary Administrator (1979-1981); and Pharmacy Nurse (1981-1997). Sister was the Financial Officer for the Charisma Gift Shop in Blauvelt, NY (1997-1998); assisted in the Development Office (1998-2009), and was the Receptionist for the Siena Center Medical Office in Blauvelt. NY (2000-2019).
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Kathleen is survived by her nephews William, Christopher, Gerard and Joseph Tucker. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Jane, and her brothers, Francis, Rev. William, and her sister, Sr. Rita Miriam.
