In Memoriam - Sister Marian Reed, OP


SR. MARIAN REED, O.P., formerly Rita Reed, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 64 years, died on March 23, 2017 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the motherhouse. Sr. Marian was 90 years of age.

Sr. Marian was born to Horace Ward Reed and Rita Cawley Reed on November 27, 1926, in New York City.  She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 10, 1953, from St. Luke’s Parish, Bronx, New York.  Sr. Marian received the Dominican habit on July 5, 1954, professed first vows on July 6, 1955, and made final profession on July 6, 1958.

Sister held the B.S. in Education and the M.S. in Physics from Fordham University.   

Sr. Marian’s many years of active ministry were devoted to education at the elementary, high school, and college levels.  Sister’s ministries included: St. Dominic’s School, Blauvelt, N.Y., 1955-1956; St. Margaret’s School, Pearl River, N.Y., 1956-1959; Our Saviour’s, Bronx, N.Y., 1959-1965; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy, Goshen, N.Y., 1965-1969, 1970-1971, and St. Catharine’s School, Blauvelt, N.Y., 1969-1970.  For thirty six (36) years, 1971-2007, Sr. Marian was an Assistant Professor of Math and Science at Dominican College, Blauvelt, New York.   Due to failing health, Sister retired to the St. Martin de Porres Community in 2007 where she resided until the time of her death.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Marian is survived by her sister, Marian Somma, of Bishop California, and brothers, Robert Reed of West Sayville, N.Y., and Richard Reed of Camarillo, California.  Surviving also are her nieces, Jennifer Reed of Silver Springs, Maryland and Linda Heiberger of Landenberg, Pennsylvania.

Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home. Nyack, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, NY.
