SISTER THOMAS JOSEPH DURKIN, OP, formerly Anne Patricia Durkin, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 62 years, died on December 13, 2020 in Nyack Hospital, Nyack, New York. Sister Thomas Joseph was 83 years of age.
Sister Thomas Joseph was born to Thomas and Delia Moyles Durkin in the Bronx, New York and entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 7, 1958 from St. Pius Parish, Bronx, N.Y. She received her Dominican Habit on June 20, 1959, professed first vows on June 6, 1960, and final vows on July 5, 1966.
Sister held the BA in History from Dominican College, Orangeburg, N.Y., and the MA in Reading Education from the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, N.Y.
Sister Thomas Joseph’s many years in ministry included working in the business office at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies (1961-1963); and Child Care at St. Dominic’s Home in Blauvelt, N.Y. (1963-1967). As an educator, Sister taught at St. Anthony’s School, Oceanside, N.Y. (1968-1969); St. Margaret’s School, in Pearl River, N.Y. (1969-1981); Saints Philip and James, Bronx, N.Y. (1981-1984); Immaculate Heart of Mary School, in Mahwah, N.J. (1984-1990); served as Assistant Principal at St. Paul’s School, Valley Cottage, N.Y. (1990-1991) and teacher at St. Paul’ School, Valley Cottage, N.Y. (1991-1999). Sister also ministered at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt as an Administrative Assistant in the Finance Office (1999-2004); Assistant to the Development Director (2000-2005) and served part-time in the Development Office (2005 to the present).
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Thomas Joseph is survived by her sister, Joan Gibbons; her brother, Thomas Durkin; her niece, Deidre La Rosa and, her nephews Thomas and Michael Gibbons. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Delia Durkin, her sisters Helen and Mary Durkin.
Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York.
